Will my wife’s debt to the government affect my tax refund?
Question by that guy: Will my wife’s debt to the government affect my tax refund?
in past years before we were married my wife has had her tax refunds “intercepted” because of unpaid obligations to the government because of student loans. now that we are married, i was wondering if we file jointly will the government take all of the refund (even the taxes i paid) because she owes them? if that is the case would it be better to file married filing seperately or just file as single?

IRS will withhold refunds on a joint return but you can file Form 8379 for an injured spouse allocation. Filing separately is generally a bad idea unless you have children then it is an even worse idea.

Yes, if you are filing jointly.
If you file a joint return, attach Form 8379 to protect your proportional share of any refund due.
Better yet, adjust your withholdings so that you have a small tax bill at filing time and you won’t have to worry about offsets ever again.
