Will my tax refund be delayed?
Question by Laurenkb273: Will my tax refund be delayed?
I have been paying off a balance with the IRS for the past six years…don’t get me started on the reason…apparently I owed $ 7,000 in taxes when I was 14 years old, now I’m 23, have gone through the OIC application (denied) and have had many unsuccessful arguments with the IRS. I am almost done paying the balance through my installment plan (still clueless as to why I owed the $ $ ). I filed for my taxes on Jan 21, 2009, and found that my refund will pay for the remainder of the taxes owed, and should still leave some money left for me. The “Where’s my refund” page on the IRS website states that I will have my refund direct deposited in my account by Feb 3, 2009.
Questions:
Will my net refund show up later than the Feb 3, due to the offset?
When do they process offsets? How does the process work?
The IRS website is worthless for exact info.
-I talked to a lady at the IRS last night, who confused the HELL out of me. She said that she see’s my refund, nothing has been processed, I could get it in as many as 3 weeks, and it could be a PAPER check-but she wasn’t sure (what the hell?). I asked her why the IRS quoted Feb.3 as the day for the deposit to show up in my account, and she said that it wasn’t a true estimate?
Has anyone experienced this situation?
Just wanted to know, because I’m excited to pay off some credit card debt!! YAY!

Since it is an IRS debt, you should have the remainder deposited into your account on the 30th. The employee couldn’t tell you anything definite because she cannot personally guarantee it—the check processing system could malfunction, your bank might not deposit right away, etc.
The IRS can only give you an exact date when the money has already posted to your account.
added: Also, the IRS has a lot of brand new employees right now for peak season. Even once it is posted, it can be confusing trying to read the matrix-like screens of the IRS computers.
Just be patient.
not scare you but Amy’s wrong they will give a date it you were pulled for a math error or your refund was flagged as a questionable refund they call each week a cycle so they post your return is being processed by say feb 3 if they haven’t fixed the error they then say feb 10 either way you should get a letter stating whatever the problem is
