Q&A: Does money buy happiness?

Question by : Does money buy happiness?
Does money buy happiness? I BELIEVE IT DOES, 100 PERCENT. WHY?????

People with a Bachelor’s degree, Masters and PH.D’s will generally earn a respectable income, in addition, they will enjoy a life time career that relates to their degree. These people will generally have a better looking wife, nicer home, reside in a safer neighborhood, they generally have an excellent retirement packages and their off spring will continue their success.

Others with degrees that earn sub par wages and while working in non-respectable jobs are generally depressed and prone to commit suicide. They will lose hope to in the American Dream, they will have less prospects in life, and their off spring will either end up in jail or six feet under. These people are coupled with American’s that had no desire to go to college, yet I see more American’s emerging into the Proletarian status.

All I care about in life is myself, because your career/income is your self worth in life and women admire rich men. I work in a depression proof industry and my fiscal income can range from $ 52k to $ 60k, in an industry that I only worked in for only 15 months, furthermore, I invest my money and I use “margin money” to increase my Margin Account and Net Worth. What do they generally want, a man with a good to great career/home/car/personality/etc….

Will, I AM extremely bored in life, perhaps because I currently have no GF and Children to support. I work all the time and barely home. That amount of income I am generating is still pocket change, compared to hedge fund managers and high-end Engineers.
chloe, I personally feel self confident, superior and more important because my income/net worth continues to stock pile, whereas I think it is utterly pathetic how some of my non-educated friends cannot save $ 3k. I saved over $ 30k, just in 2010 when you include my tax return! I could of hooked up with some “blond girl”, but I am gone all the time and I work in a SEMI respectable job.

Obama’s stance on Social Security and tax hikes……?

Question by Gretl: Obama’s stance on Social Security and tax hikes……?
It was former President Bill Clinton who several years ago set out the limited options for Social Security reform: cut benefits, invest privately, or raise taxes. During the last Democratic candidate debate, his wife refused to put any of those options on the “proverbial table.” The other Democratic contenders weren’t as hesitant. Five candidates, including John Edwards and Barack Obama, supported lifting the cap on payroll taxes to finance the system.

Currently, only the first $ 97,500 of annual income is subject to the payroll tax. Edwards in particular was adamant about taxing earners who make over $ 200,000 a year. But while soaking the rich may be a politically popular approach, the reality is that this enormous tax hike would seriously damage the U.S. economy while doing very little to save Social Security.

Eliminating the cap on payroll taxes would be, by far, the biggest tax hike in U.S. history: more than $ 1.3 trillion in new taxes over the first 10 years alone. As bad as that would be in the aggregate, it would be even worse for individual workers. A worker earning $ 103,000 per year would pay $ 1,240 more in taxes each year.

Moreover, raising the tax cap would not just impact the super rich, as is often argued, but would fall most heavily on the upper middle class. Some 9.2 million Americans would see their taxes increased. Roughly three quarters are managers or other professionals such as doctors, lawyers, and engineers. 16 percent work in sales or office occupations, while the remainder includes teachers, nurses, truck drivers, farmers, and police officers. Small businesses would be particularly hammered: about one-third of the workers affected by raising the cap would be small business owners.
But Rouss., massive cuts in military spending ok, but that is not the point here. The point is that Obama is in favor of this.
The question itself is not a rant Bradley. The content is a written report NOT A QUESTION BIRDBRAIN. But it’s a serious issue.

I’ve never heard of a teacher making more than $ 97,500 a year. Most farmers are perpetually in debt. And few police officers make that much. I’m sure some doctors do though.

But if you insist upon not raising taxes, then I propose making up the money through massive cuts in military spending. $ 500 billion a year is more than we need for defense, I think $ 100 billion a year is plenty. There we go, problem solved. No tax hikes.

Edit: why wouldn’t he be? It’s as you said, a politically popular position to take. Democratic views on the economy and Republican views on the economy differ to some extent. Democrats don’t feel that taxes have to be as low as Republicans claim in order to have a healthy economy. I’m saying that if you don’t want to raise taxes, but still want to save social security, then cuts have to be made. I think the military budget would be the most logical place, but it would be politically unpopular to cut it, just as it would be politically unpopular to do nothing about social security. They have to do something, something that people will support and we know they don’t want it privatized, they’ll only except small spending cuts, they don’t want a decrease in benefits, so they go with their last viable option: raise taxes.

Edit again, to below: The average teacher makes $ 47,602/yr. according to the American federation of teachers or just over $ 52,000 according to the BLS. The average police officer makes $ 48,410 according to the BLS. The average corrections officer makes under $ 40,000 a year according to the BLS. Gee, I’ll take my hard evidence over your anecdotal evidence anyday.

are only broke women “loving enough” to be surrogates?

Question by tish_part deux: are only broke women “loving enough” to be surrogates?
i asked this question to a colleague today during a syllabus review ( when graduate students and new instructors submit their syllabus proposal for feedback) for an ethics course.

his reply was, “don’t see too many affluent young women from manhattan volunteering to be surrogates; yet many from their social class will “pay” for a surrogate.”

many on this board choose to believe that surrogacy is due to an innate need to help an infertile couple. in the past few months several celebrities have come out about their desire to pay another woman to breed for them. while many think this is cool and loving, we fail to acknowledge that most of the surrogates for these celebrities are living in rural areas, undereducated, broke; or in foreign countries. and $ 30K is an annual salary; or can feed their family for several years.

i’m sure there MUST be some “society hill” woman out there who wants to give the gift of life??? yes?

so why don’t they? and why do poor women?

is it that poor women are more “loving?” or is it that $ 30K to a manhattan socialite is not enough to go through pregnancy for another person?

thoughts?
teresa, i have way too many counter-arguments to your post… so i’ll have to concede, i absolutely, vehemently disagree with you, on all points.. be well.
alyssa, i lived in se virgina and i’ll tell you, the military wives who are surrogates are NOT married to enlisted men making $ 100K! many enlisted families get WIC and other assistance, because the salary from the military is a step above minimum wage. and if they are making money, they are officer’s wives and not the ones renting out their wombs.
ladies…we can debate costs and poor vs. working, et al… the point: military wives/middle class wives do it for the MONEY! most women do it for the MONEY! that’s why “society hill” girls are not renting out their wombs: because they are not hard up enough for MONEY!

what’s sad is that people are being sexually exploited (yes, it is sexual exploitation–charting periods, days of intercourse, forced abstinence, having some dude’s biological juices inside, et al) to make money. seriously why not just do porn? or sex work?

Answer by too lady to rest
My thought is that desperation has to play a part in this when it is a surrogacy between two strangers. Why would a woman who has a life that is going along swimmingly put her marriage, own children and career at risk for a stranger and $ 30,000? However, if $ 30,000 could solve other problems for a woman, those advantages could outweigh the damages.

Now, if we are talking about surrogacy for a friend/family member, that’s an entirely different animal.

Add: There are two types of surrogacy: gestational and traditional. In traditional surrogacy, the egg does belong (biologically) to the surrogate mother. I am always curious in celebrity cases which type of surrogacy was used.

Question by unclebob: Why is Congress allowing this type of “Immigration Reform”?
Could it be that, if they enforce our current laws and deport all “undocumented workers”, they would just end up sending even more of my tax dollars to third world sewers, so that their corrupt leaders can tell us how evil the USA is from an even larger mansion, while their poor uneducated masses starve?
