Can someone explain what the phrase “pay their fair share of taxes” means?
Question by Objective Thinker: Can someone explain what the phrase “pay their fair share of taxes” means?
90% of the time when I hear this phrase it’s from someone who pays less than $ 1000 of taxes a year and the other 10% of the time it’s from a rich pundit who panders to a certain type of demographic.
I just don’t understand how they use the phrase with a straight face. “Their fair share of taxes” as they talk about how the “rich” don’t pay enough. The top 1% of EARNERS pay over 33% of tax revenue (roads, police officers, fire fighters, politician salaries, etc.). [Source: http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/incometaxandtheirs/a/whopaysmost.htm] Well yeah, you’re right. That is pretty unfair. The rich don’t use more road than poor people. The rich don’t use police more than poor people. The rich don’t use welfare more than poor people. You’re right….they aren’t paying their fair share…they’re paying a considerably unfair share – ours.
Look, I know it’s 100x more popular to hate rich people than American Idol…I know that. But that’s propaganda bullshit. These “rich people” you hate so much…they pay for everything. Like literally everything. They create jobs, they run all the charities, and they pay for almost all of the government services you love so much. This isn’t biting the hand that feeds you, this is chomping the arm off and then yelling at the shoulder. It is naive irrationality at best and blatant partisan ignorance at worst.
So can someone with a brain explain to me what exactly constitutes “paying your fair share”? Because it seems to me that the people who say this phrase the most, would LEAST want everyone to pay their FAIR share. Everyone paying their fair share would be the worst thing that could possible happen to these people.
Acidblonde…let me address one of the talking points you’ve heard and then have repeated.
“If these rich people can benefit from society than they can contribute to it”
They do. They get rich by starting businesses, which means creating jobs (something the government NEEDS to function). Creating jobs should be rewarded, not punished like it is. Your statement is as ignorant as it is incorrect. Please, educate yourself
Hey now….you’re quote is blatantly false

Read that article and consider your ignorance on that issue solved.
Sugarbear…I think it says a lot about the state of ignorance in America when your statement that “people have more of a stake in government when they pay into it” gets mostly thumbs down.
Freeloaders don’t want to pay when all they have to do is vote for someone who will steal from others
Jeeezus Christ….the argument “they make more so they should pay more” is probably the most ignorant thing I have heard in over 10 years. Think about that statement. If you think about that statement for a minute and don’t see the ignorance, then you are part of the problem

I’ve asked a hundred times on here how much money liberals consider to be “their fair share,” but they never answer.
You know why they don’t? Because this allows them to raise taxes to X level….and then in a couple years to again say they’re not paying “their fair share,” and to raise it to Y level…and a couple years later to say they’re not paying “their fair share” If they ever told what their fair share is, they couldn’t do that.
TAXES ARE NEVER FAIR SO PLEASE DON’T BRING UP A FAIR TAX. TAX INVOLVES STEALING FROM A PERSON WHO WORKS TO PAY FOR SOMEONE WHO WON’T WORK. IT IS NEVER FAIR. IF IT WAS UP TO ME WE WOULD OF HAD NO IRS AND NO TAXES.
Under Obama’s system of refundable tax credits there are people who not only pay no taxes they get other people’s tax money back!
Now that’s not paying your share.
It could come from the Bible where it says, “to whom much is given, much is expected”. It’s in Luke if you want to look it up.
My father pays over 50% of taxable income to the IRS. He is in that 1% of tax payers that contribute an enormous tax revenue for the government. No, it’s not “fair,” but that’s how a progressive tax works. There are many other regressive taxes such as sales tax. If one person has to pay 6% sales tax, but has more money than another person, he is paying less of a fraction than his overall income. I agree, though. The higher class is misunderstood and underestimated.
And for anyone who thinks my dad got “lucky” or that he was born into it… Please, give me a break. He came from a foreign country with enough for graduate school. He went to a public, tuition-free, undergraduate school. He worked his ass off to get where he is today and continues to work 12-14 hour days.
Hey, if rich people benefit from American society, they can contribute to it.
Otherwise, they are free to go to another country to capitalize there. You know, I hear Somalia has a completely unobstructed free market with no government interference whatsoever.
edit. I stand by my statement. Nobody’s punishing them for creating jobs. I suspect if they were, all the companies would have up and left – so it can’t be that bad. They get the opportunity to do business in one of the biggest markets in the world. They get to do business with the American consumer. They get to do business in American communities, protected by American laws, serviced by American policemen. They use workers educated in American schools, who drive to work on American highways.
Like I said, if they have a problem with the taxes, I hear Somalia is much more lenient. Let’s see them pack up and move there. Like that’s going to happen.
The rich are failing at convincing everyone how bad they have it – I know rich people in higher tax brackets. I know business owners – heck, my father owns and operates a small business. I’m all for fiscal responsibility but progressive taxes are just, fair, and the American way.
Your cute little rant with it’s mindless insults fails at proving otherwise. Behaving and debating like an adult must be significantly more challenging than name calling and repeating things overheard on Fauxnews.
Submit the question to Warren Buffet. We agree no one is “richer” than he, right? He asked this simple question” “Why does my secretary who makes $ 60k a year, pay more taxes than I do?”
Do you think he is admitting something here? Go to bed, my friend, and think about your question. The top earners in this country do NOT even come close to paying their shar of taxes!!!
